Music of the Moment: St. Lucia

Levon Lock recently introduced me to St. Lucia – we were driving to the Vodacom #Vodawalk when Lev played me “Elevate”. Lev said he loved the retro 80’s sound of St. Lucia. I said “they” remind me of Tears For Fears. Lev said “Who?”.

I downloaded the album “When The Night” the next day. I love it. The production is amazing.

On visiting the St. Lucia website, I found out that St. Lucia is Jean-Philip Grobler, a Jozi boy that used to perform with the Drakensberg Boys Choir School. I was taken aback that this slick sound was from Johannesburg, South Africa! Cool!

His online bio continues:
St. Lucia was born out of a moment in early 2010 when Grobler was looking to the past for inspiration. Growing frustrated with a rock project that was starting to feel forced, he delved back into the music that had first inspired him: Fleetwood Mac, Peter Gabriel, Madonna and other songs from his youth.
His retro-ness is certainly evident in the album. He’s also produced it, and others for artists like HAERTS, while remixing for Passion Pit and Foster The People, and collaborating with RAC.

St. Lucia is currently touring Australia before returning to the States.
