At the end of Fox street (by the Johannesburg Central Police Station) is a precinct of vacant warehouses, shortly to be redeveloped into a Lifestyle Marketplace.
Heather Mason shared her experiences on her blog, and that got us very excited about visiting the space before redevelopment begins. We reached out to Gerald Garner of Double G Media (JoburgPlaces) and insisted on visiting. Thanks Gerald for letting us in!
Some of the buildings are supported by wooden beams and pillars – this dates them back to the early 20th century!
It’s truly an amazing space – even in it’s current state.
After redevelopment, the space will be known as The Sheds @1Fox and is billed as a contemporary food, wine and lifestyle emporium. Phase one of the development is scheduled to open on 1 October 2014, to coincide with the Joburg City Festival, operating as a pop-up market and events space until 31 December 2014. This will be followed by the installation of the permanent marketplace and tenants in January 2015.
Unlike other city markets, The Sheds will be open during the week, servicing local business and residents in the area, in addition to the weekend sightseers. The Sheds will make it its mission to showcase South African produce and design, with a requirement for tenants to be locally based.
